Already realizing the fruits of T. Boone Pickens’ labor in the form of a $100-million-plus dollar upgrade to their football stadium, Oklahoma State has received a bountiful donation from another university alumnus that will further help the Cowboys advance in the arms race that is college football facilities.
By way of the Oklahoman, construction on the Sherman E. Smith Center is set to begin on Aug. 1st. The facility will approximately cost $16 million; construction on the adjacent outdoor practice fields has already begun at a cost of roughly $3 million.
“Sherman Smith was a good friend of mine,” OSU athletics director Mike Holder said. “His relationship with Boone Pickens dates back to the 1940s. They shared the same birthday, were in the same fraternity and had a business relationship.
“It’s fitting that two of the most important structures for OSU Athletics will be across the street from each other and will bear the names of Sherman Smith and Boone Pickens,”
As far as facilities go, I believe Barry Switzer hit it right on the head.
Of course, Sooner fans might counter with this argument: 81-17-7.
