Normally, when a head coach reaches a new deal with his current school, at least a modest pay raise is one of the end results of the process.
Unless you’re Fresno State head coach/philanthropist Pat Hill.
The Fresno Bee is reporting this evening that Hill and Fresno State have officially signed off on a contract extension that was agreed to in principle the middle of last December. The new deal could keep Hill, about to enter his 14th season as Fresno’s coach, on the Bulldogs’ sidelines through the 2013 season.
In part to help the athletic department, Hill also voluntarily took a pay cut with the new deal. Again, Hill voluntarily took a pay cut.
“It’s not about the money,” Hill said. “This is home. I believe in this community. I get a lot of satisfaction seeing these kids succeed on the field, with their families and in their careers.
“I’m really trying to be a team player. ... One of the ways I can help is by taking a pay cut. I wanted a chance to get this done here. I have a great group of kids and they deserve it.”
Hill has a 100-65 record with the Bulldogs, including a 70-33 record in WAC play.
