Two months after leaving Rutgers, Blake Rankin has found a new football home a step down from the FBS level.
Delaware head coach Dave Brock confirmed Wednesday that Rankin has transferred to the Blue Hens. As Delaware is an FCS program, the quarterback will be eligible to play immediately in 2014.
Brock served as the Scarlet Knights’ offensive coordinator during Rankin’s true freshman season in 2012, which consisted mostly of scout team quarterbacking during a redshirt year.
“I thought he was a good prospect, but because he was on the scout team I didn’t really coach him that much,” the coach told the Wilmington News Journal.
Rankin was a three-star member of RU’s 2012 recruiting class who didn’t see any playing time during his brief tenure in Piscataway.
Three-year starter Trent Hurley, himself a transfer from Bowling Green, is firmly entrenched at the position heading into his senior year, meaning Rankin, barring injury, will have to wait until 2015 to compete for the starting job. Beginning next season, Rankin will have two years of eligibility remaining.
