Three days after Tommy Tuberville stunned many/most/everybody by leaving Texas Tech for Cincinnati, Kirby Hocutt continued what was certainly an unanticipated search for a new head football coach.
According to Greg Wallace of OrangeAndWhite.com, the athletic director confirmed that he would be interviewing Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris for the vacancy. Hocutt acknowledged the interest at an Anderson, SC, airport, where he met the coordinator ahead of the interview.
Morris declined comment on the situation.
In two years with the Tigers, Morris has transformed CU’s offense into one of the most explosive and prolific in the country. Morris, though, has just three years experience at the collegiate level, spending 16 years as well-respected high school coach in Texas before becoming the coordinator at Tulsa in 2010.
Despite that relative inexperience, he was also connected to the North Carolina State opening earlier this month.
One report pegged Morris and current Texas A&M offensive coordinator/former Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Klingsbury -- who reportedly interviewed today as well -- as the front-runners for the job, with Tech’s decision possibly coming by the weekend. Hocutt has not publicly stated any type of time frame for a hire.
