Going back to their days together as head coach and quarterback at Virginia Tech, Frank Beamer has always been a big proponent and huge supporter of Michael Vick, even during the latter’s barkest darkest hours.
Beamer applauded the NFL’s decision to reinstate the former Hokies star last summer after Vick served prison time on federal dog-fighting charges. Over a year later, the coach is back to slapping his two hands together when it comes to Vick.
As you no doubt have heard by now, the Philadelphia Eagles somewhat stunningly announced Tuesday that Vick will start for the NFL club this Sunday. When asked about Vick’s ascension to the starting job, Beamer praised his former player for taking advantage of the second chance he’s been given.
“If he can get back -- and I think he will, I don’t think there’s any question about that -- then I think he’s got a story to tell,” Beamer said. “‘I made mistakes. You’re responsible for your actions, and then I came back from them.’ ...
“The guy’s working awfully hard to get it back, and I’m pulling for him because I know he’s a good person. He made some terrible mistakes, but he’s a good person.”
Vick’s admitted he’s made mistakes in the past, and apologized for those actions. We can think of at least one of his NFL brethren who could learn a thing or two about contrition from Vick.
