Javon Baker caught his only target for 12 yards in the Patriots’ Week 18 win over the Bills.
It was the first catch of Baker’s career, which is certainly not the start to his professional career that the fourth-round pick out of UCF expected. As a day-three draft pick, it’s not a surprise that Baker began the year down on the depth chart, but it’s a bit concerning that he was never able to claw his way up despite the Patriots struggling all year long. Baker is just 22 years old, posted 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns on 52 receptions in his senior season of college, and was a highly-touted recruit out of high school, so there is some talent there. Even if New England adds talent on the perimeter this offseason, Baker figures to get a chance to compete for snaps with Kayshon Boutte and any rookie in the 2025 season. However, it would be foolish to count on him for a big role unless we see a major improvement in OTAs.

Kendrick Bourne caught 2-of-4 targets for 22 yards in the Patriots’ Week 17 loss to the Chargers.
Bourne’s role as the veteran of the Pats’ wideout group does not allow for much fantasy production. He caught just two passes in a blowout loss. Rookies Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker came into the game late, but neither caught a pass. Bourne should remain off fantasy radars while Polk and Baker have had disappointing rookie seasons.

Patriots declared WR Javon Baker, LB Marte Map, QB Joe Milton, OG Tyrese Robinson, and OL Cole Strange inactive for Week 15 against the Cardinals.
Baker has barely seen the field this year and is out with a concussion for Week 15. The rookie has one target and no receptions as his first NFL campaign nears an end.
  • NE Wide Receiver #2
Patriots declared WR K.J. Osborn, WR Tyquan Thornton, QB Joe Milton, S Kyle Duggar, and DT Eric Johnson inactive for Week 10 against the Titans.
Both Osborn and Thornton are healthy scratches and are rumored to be trade candidates ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. That should mean more snaps/potential targets for Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, but the New England passing game is one to avoid right now.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said “The last couple weeks, he’s put together great weeks of practice. Now hopefully he gets an opportunity to play some receiver” when asked about rookie WR Javon Baker.
“He’s an explosive player. We need to see that on Sunday,” Mayo continued. He sure seems to be hinting at a real role for Baker against the Titans this week. Baker was finally active in Week 8 for the first time since Week 2. It sounds like he could be coming for Tyquan Thornton and K.J. Osborn’s snap shares in Week 9, and could possibly go further in the pecking order if he looks good against Tennessee.
  • NE Wide Receiver #6
Patriots declared WR Javon Baker, LT Vederian Lowe, DT Jeremiah Pharms, LB Sione Takitaki, WR Tyquan Thornton, and QB Joe Milton inactive for Week 7 against the Jaguars.
Baker has only appeared in two games this year and is yet to catch his first NFL pass. The fourth-round rookie is a long way from fantasy relevancy right now.
  • NE Wide Receiver #6
Patriots declared WR Javon Baker, QB Joe Milton III (3rd QB), DT Eric Johnson II, LB Curtis Jacobs, OT Demontrey Jacobs, G Zach Thomas and G Sidy Sow inactive for Week 1’s matchup against the Bengals.
Baker was an early standout in training camp, but tailed off in August as drops became an issue. He made headlines for the wrong reasons last week after going live on Instagram to complain about being pulled over by police in Boston. Head coach Jerod Mayo said Baker has already been punished and that it wouldn’t impact his game status. Nevertheless, Baker is a healthy inactive while Kayshon Boutte is active. Baker is buried on the Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart at the moment.

98.5 The Sports Hub’s Alex Barth reports Patriots WR Javon Baker “seems to have fallen out of the top wide receiver rotation.”
Baker was selected in the fourth round of this year’s draft by the Patriots and most recently was playing with deep reserves in the preseason. Barth notes that “based on his practice reps it doesn’t look like he’ll have a big role in the offense once the season starts.” As a day three wideout, it’s not entirely surprising that Baker is headed for a deep reserve role his rookie year. However, with a shallow Patriots receiving group, fantasy managers were at least hoping to see some production this season. Instead, it looks like Baker will operate behind second-rounder Ja’Lynn Polk, DeMario Douglas, and the rest of the Patriots starting group, making him more of a long-term, Dynasty investment as of now.
  • NE Wide Receiver #6
Patriots fourth-round WR Javon Baker was playing with the deep reserves in Thursday’s preseason opener.
Baker was the sixth Pats wideout into the game. It’s not surprising, per se, but Baker in theory had a bit of a shortcut to getting into the game sooner with Kendrick Bourne and Pop Douglas both banged-up. Not that you had re-draft expectations for Baker, anyways, but he is looking like a strict Dynasty option for 2024.

Patriots signed No. 110 overall pick Javon Baker to a four-year contract.
Baker becomes the fourth rookie from the Patriots’ 2024 draft class to sign his contract. The former UCF Knight has a chance to compete for playing time in a thin wide receiver room, but will likely be stuck behind Kendrick Bourne and fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk for snaps on the outside. Baker has good size and athleticism and averaged 21.9 YPR in his final college season, but he should be viewed as more of a developmental player in his rookie season, assuming he doesn’t get shoehorned into a role due to injuries.
