Fairmont State has added a Division-I guard, signing former St. John’s sixth man Malik Stith, the senior acknowledged via his Twitter account Thursday.
The move officially happened back in May, but with the start of the school year, the news became more widely known.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Malik into our basketball family,” FSU coach Jerrod Calhoun told the Times West Virginian. “We needed a true point guard with the ability to come in and lead our team. We needed a floor general who can make an impact on both ends of the floor, and I think we have that with Malik on board now.”
Last season for a historically young Red Storm team under coach Steve Lavin, Stith was the only returning player from a 2010-11 squad that reached the NCAA tournament.
He averaged 2.7 points and one assist per game for St. John’s but did not register minutes in the final nine games.
“The best thing about Malik is he brings us so much experience having played a lot of minutes in the best league in college basketball,” Calhoun went on to tell the paper. “He’s played in a lot of big games, and played against a lot of tough opponents. He told me he wants to win a championship. He’ll fit right in with our guys.”
Stith will have one year of eligibility remaining at Fairmont State.
