The Bill Carmody era at Northwestern is officially over, as the school announced that the coach’s nine-year tenure would be coming to an end.
Carmody’s Wildcats lost their last nine games this season and finished 13-19 on the year. It wasn’t entirely Carmody’s fault, as Northwestern dealt with a devastating series of injuries all year long. But it was yet another season where Northwestern ended the season without a bid to the NCAA tournament, and when you’re a coach in the Big Ten that’s made it nine years with all of two NIT bids to show for your effort, you’ve probably worn out your welcome.
Carmody is well-respected by people around the sport. He’s a good guy and is generally thought of as a better coach than his record at Northwestern would indicate. That’s not an easy place to win.
The name that everyone seems to be associating with the Northwestern job is Chris Collins, who is currently an assistant coach at Duke.
