Contreras

Contreras has a 5.20 ERA over five seasons in the minors, but he made some major strides this season by posting a 3.12 ERA and 63/24 K/BB ratio over 60 2/3 relief innings between Class A and High-A. The Reds were intrigued enough to include the 21-year-old on their 40-man roster.

Contreras has allowed one run over 3 1/3 relief innings for the Reds this season. He’s clearing out for the arrival of Raisel Iglesias, who will start Wednesday.

Contreras, 23, had a 2.70 ERA and 27/11 K/BB ratio in 20 innings over three starts and six relief appearances in Double-A this year. He’ll provide a fresh arm for the bullpen.

Contreras pitched three shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out six in relief of rehabbing starter Mat Latos, who pitched the first four innings. He had a breakout 2013, putting up a 3.47 ERA with 8.3 K/9 across 132 1/3 innings in High-A and Double-A. This is likely the way he will remain on schedule to start again on the correct day, but monitor this situation as Contreras could make an appearance in 2014.

Contreras has appeared in just eight games above A-ball, so he never had a shot to make the Opening Day roster. He should join Louisville’s rotation.
