  • BAL Relief Pitcher #40
Orioles placed RHP Burch Smith on the 15-day injured list with a right adductor strain.
Smith’s regular season is over, and it remains to be seen whether the 34-year-old can help the Baltimore postseason in the playoffs. The right-hander will hit the shelf with Danny Coulombe activated off the IL in a corresponding move.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #20
Orioles recalled RHP Burch Smith from Triple-A Norfolk.
The Orioles signed Smith to a minor league contract on June 28th, and he pitched just two scoreless innings in Triple-A, striking out two before the Orioles decided to bring him up. The 34-year-old appeared in 25 games out of the Marlins’ bullpen earlier this season, posting a 4.25 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and a 23/9 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings. Dillon Tate was sent down to make room.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #20
Orioles signed RHP Burch Smith to a minor league contract.
The 34-year-old hurler appeared in 25 games out of the Marlins’ bullpen this season, posting a 4.25 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and a 23/9 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings of work. He’ll add some quality organizational bullpen depth for the Orioles at Triple-A Norfolk,
  • FA Relief Pitcher #20
    Marlins released RHP Burch Smith.
Smith passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week and the two sides have agreed to part ways. The 34-year-old journeyman reliever posted a respectable 4.25 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 23/9 K/BB ratio across 29 2/3 innings (25 appearances) this season for Miami. He should be able to latch on somewhere else as extra organizational relief depth.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #20
Marlins designated RHP Burch Smith for assignment.
Smith had a 4.25 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 25 appearances with the Marlins this season. The 34-year-old right-hander spent the last two seasons overseas pitching in Korea and Japan respectively. The Marlins have seven days to trade Smith or place him on waivers.
  • Relief Pitcher #46
Marlins acquired Burch Smith from the Rays in exchange for cash considerations, according to Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin.
Smith had an assignment clause in his minor league contract and the Rays didn’t have a spot for him on their 26-man roster. The 33-year-old hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2021 when he made 31 appearances with the Athletics.
  • TB Catcher #21
Rays reassigned Cs Francisco Mejia and Rob Brantley, OF Jake Mangum and RHPs Naoyuki Uwasawa, Burch Smith and Joe Record to minor league camp.
No real surprises here among the latest batch of cuts from Rays camp, but Uwasawa stands out as one of the more notable ones since he signed a minor league pact with the Rays during the offseason to attempt to make the jump to the majors from Japan.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #46
Rays signed RHP Burch Smith to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Smith returns stateside as an interesting low-risk gamble for the Rays after spending the last two years split between Japan and Korea. The 33-year-old righty last appeared in the big leagues during the 2021 campaign when he made 31 relief appearances for the Athletics.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #40
Burch Smith has signed with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization.
This will be Smith’s second season overseas but the first season in Korea after a year with the Seibu Lions in Japan. The 32-year-old posted a 3.29 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 62/22 K/BB ratio across 64 2/3 innings. His $1 million deal is a much better contract than he would have received coming back stateside and signing a minor league contract.

  • BAL Relief Pitcher #40
Burch Smith has signed with the Seibu Lions of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
Smith recorded a pedestrian 5.40 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28/11 K/BB ratio across 43 1/3 innings (31 appearances) with the Athletics last season. The 31-year-old righty, who has made 102 appearances (13 starts) in the majors since 2013, refused a minor-league assignment last October and elected free agency after being jettisoned from Oakland’s 40-man roster. He’ll look to rebuild his value overseas in Japan next season.
