Bloom hopes ‘it works out' between Red Sox, JBJ

John Tomase discusses the lack of movement across the MLB including the Red Sox.

As the calendar turns to 2021, the Red Sox still have plenty of roster-building to do before opening spring training.

In a slowly developing free agent market, some of Boston's roster spots remain unfilled and a host of players remain unsigned.

That group of free agents includes long-time Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., but it sounds like the door is still open for the Gold Glover to re-sign with the only major league franchise he's ever played for.

During an appearance on WEEI radio Wednesday, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom discussed where things stand with the team and their long-time centerfielder.

“We’re still in contact with him and have been consistently throughout the offseason,” Bloom said. “I know in the Globe recently he talked about it where that timetable is probably going to be a little longer. I would expect we’re going to stay engaged with him and hope it lines up, hope it makes sense for him and hope it fits our puzzle.

"You guys know and I haven’t been shy about saying it just in the short time I got to know Jackie, I just became incredibly fond of him. Obviously there’s business aspects of it too, for us and for him, but just emotionally speaking, I hope it works out.”

There are certainly obstacles to a reunion, including the fact that JBJ's agent is Scott Boras, who will boil any contract negotiations down to the bottom line, eschewing the sentimentality of staying with the same team.

There's also the fact that Bradley has other suitors, so even though Sox brass have repeatedly stated their interest in re-signing him, the price would have to be right. If he doesn't return to Boston, the Red Sox have still done some work to bolster their outfield depth for 2021, signing Hunter Renfroe to a one-year contract.
