It's been less than a year since Marcelo Mayer was drafted fourth overall, but the Boston Red Sox prospect already is making his presence felt with the big-league club.
Mayer faced off against Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi during the team's intrasquad scrimmage Monday morning. The 19-year-old shortstop showed off his left-handed pop with a blast to right-center field.

Sure, it was just a scrimmage, but homering off an MLB pitcher of Eovaldi's caliber still is nothing to scoff at. It's the latest example of why Mayer already is considered the organization's No. 1 ranked prospect and a top-20 prospect in all of MLB. In his first taste of spring training action last week, he showcased his impressive plate discipline with a six-pitch walk.
The 2022 campaign will mark Mayer's first full professional season. He'll likely begin the year in Low-A Salem after spending last season in the Florida Complex League. It'll be a while before we see Mayer in the majors, but the future continues to look bright for Boston's farm system.
