Right-handed reliever Carson Smith reportedly is back with the Red Sox on a minor league contract, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
Smith, who elected free agency after being outrighted off the Sox' 40-man roster in November, will be invited to major league camp.
The 29-year-old underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in mid-June after injuring himself while throwing his glove in frustration. He also missed most of the 2016 and '17 seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Smith enjoyed a successful two seasons with the Mariners before being acquired by the Red Sox in 2015. Since then, he has only pitched 23.2 innings.
