The Boston Red Sox had a pretty rough night Thursday.
But if you're looking for a silver lining, you can find it at LeLacheur Park.
That's where Boston's Class A Short-Season affiliate Lowell Spinners hosted the Batavia Muckdogs in game two of their New York-Penn League semifinal series -- and where Sox prospect Yusniel Padron-Artilles made history.
The 21-year-old right-hander relieved starter Jay Groome in the fourth inning and promptly struck out the first 12 batters he faced.
Padron-Artilles' 12 consecutive strikeouts tied a professional baseball (minors and majors) record and would have broken Hall of Famer Tom Seaver's record of 10 straight Ks.
Padron-Artilles, a Cuba native who was born in 1997, admitted after the game he doesn't know who Seaver is. But the Sox prospect certainly got his own name out there Thursday, racking up a total of 14 strikeouts in six innings of one-hit, scoreless relief and earning the win after first baseman Joe Davis clubbed a walk-off home run.
Padron-Artilles isn't listed among the Red Sox's top 60 prospects, and SoxProspects.com projects him as an "organizational arm" who "lacks a pitch to carry him in the upper minors." But perhaps this dazzling outing will move him up a few pegs.
