The Boston Red Sox are loading up on shortstop talent.
After selecting high school star Marcelo Mayer with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Red Sox selected another shortstop in the first round of Sunday night's 2022 draft.
Boston chose Mikey Romero with the No. 24 overall pick. Romero recently finished his senior year at Orange Lutheran High School near Los Angeles. He's actually good friends with Mayer, too.

Romero reacted to being drafted by the Red Sox with the following tweet posted Sunday night:
It's going to be several years before Romero reaches the major leagues, but if both him and Mayer reach their potential, the Red Sox could be set up quite nicely in the infield for a long time, especially if Xander Bogaerts and/or Rafael Devers re-sign.
The last three of the Red Sox' World Series-winning teams (2007, 2013 and 2018) were built with lots of homegrown players.
