The Red Sox made a move to bolster their starting pitching staff on Saturday.
Boston acquired veteran right-hander Andrew Cashner and cash considerations from the Orioles for minor league infielder Noelberth Romero and minor league outfielder Elio Prado.
Cashner has struggled with inconsistency throughout his 10-year career, but lately, the 32-year-old has been lights out. He's posted a 1.41 ERA with zero home runs allowed in his last five starts, per Red Sox Notes on Twitter.
Here's what NBC Sports Boston's Red Sox insider John Tomase had to say about Cashner as a potential trade target last week:
"Cashner, a 32-year-old who has bounced back from a horrible 2018 to go 8-3 with a 4.03 ERA. His underlying numbers (4.43 FIP, 6.2 K/9) are by no means elite, but that's the point: he should be available for relatively little, and with nine quality starts in 16 turns, he'd be just what the back of the Red Sox rotation needs."
With Nathan Eovaldi being moved to the bullpen for the foreseeable future, Cashner presumably will take his slot as the No. 5 starter.
Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters the plan is for Cashner to arrive in Boston on Sunday and start Tuesday vs. the Blue Jays.
