Report: Boras finalized Rodon's Yankees deal at Fenway Park

Scott Boras shook hands with the Boston Red Sox brass while helping their archrival on Thursday.

The MLB mega-agent joined Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and president Sam Kennedy at Fenway Park to introduce Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshida. Simultaneously, he was finalizing a deal that would send Carlos Rodon, the top starting pitcher remaining on the free-agent market, to the New York Yankees.

According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, Boras finished up negotiations with the Yankees while enjoying a meal courtesy of the Red Sox.

"Moments after the media availability to introduce Yoshida, Boras concluded a deal with the Sox’ rivals, negotiating a six-year, $162 million deal with the New York Yankees for lefthander Carlos Rodón. The late-stage negotiations took place as Boras snacked on food from a buffet provided by the Red Sox," Speier wrote.

When it rains, it pours for the Red Sox this offseason.

The Red Sox already are taking plenty of heat for homegrown shortstop Xander Bogaerts, another Boras client, leaving for the San Diego Padres. Boras shared his take on the two sides failing to come to an agreement.

“What’s Xander’s goal? Winning. What’s also his goal? He wants his appropriate valuation in the market,” Boras said, per Speier. “We found that on a number of levels for him and chose that. For [the Red Sox], their model had a different modality with it and they moved forward with it.”

Boras clients have been paid large sums of money already in free agency. Carlos Correa (13 years, $350 million from the San Francisco Giants) and Brandon Nimmo (eight years, $126 million from the New York Mets) are two of the other top contracts negotiated by Boras over the couple of weeks.
