Report: Might Red Sox add another free-agent utility man?

Newly acquired by the Red Sox, Adam Ottavino talks about his experience living in Boston while attending Northeastern University.

The Boston Red Sox may not be done improving their positional versatility.

The Red Sox continue to have interest in free-agent utility man Marwin Gonzalez despite recently signing utility player Kike Hernandez, Mass Live's Chris Cotillo reported Tuesday.

Gonzalez has played at least 50 career games at every non-battery position and played at least 14 games each at first base, second base and third base during last year's 60-game season.

Tomase: Ottavino trade proves Bloom has a plan for rebuilding Sox

He hit just .211 with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 2020 but is three seasons removed from a 23-homer, 90-RBI campaign in 2017 and has decent pop as a switch hitter.

Hernandez has a similar profile as a super utility man but is a right-handed bat. The Red Sox reportedly are mulling a reunion with left-handed first baseman Mitch Moreland, but Gonzalez presents another option as a lefty complement to right-handed first baseman Bobby Dalbec who could add depth at second base or outfield, as well.

Gonzalez also has ties to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was his bench coach on the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros. The Sox initially were linked to Gonzalez on Jan. 15 and the market for the 31-year-old has been relatively quiet since then.
