The Boston Red Sox are back to perusing the free-agent market, and it looks like one item on their shopping list is a utility infielder.
According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, the Red Sox are among the teams interested in Jonathan Villar. Also in the mix for the nine-year veteran are the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Villar, 30, has spent most of his MLB career at shortstop (432 games), second base (367 games), and third base (151 games). He also has played 15 games in the outfield -- 10 in center field and five in left.
Last season with the New York Mets, Villar posted a slash line of .249/.322/.416 with 18 home runs and 42 RBI in 142 games. The versatile switch-hitter is a career .258 hitter in his nine season with the Mets, Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, and Houston Astros.
