MLB rumors: Red Sox lose Kyle Schwarber to Phillies in free agency

The Boston Red Sox will not be bringing Kyle Schwarber back to Fenway Park for the 2022 MLB season.

The veteran slugger has agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, per NBC Sports Philly's Jim Salisbury.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom made the following comment on Schwarber:

Bloom says Red Sox stayed in touch with Schwarber the whole way. He’s reportedly headed to the Phillies. “It was to a level that doesn’t make sense… as much as we love him.”

The Red Sox acquired Schwarber before last year's trade deadline and he proved to be a good fit in Boston.

Schwarber batted .291 with seven home runs and 18 RBI in 41 regular season games with the Red Sox. He also hit three homers with six RBI, five walks and eight runs scored in 11 playoff games.

The loss of Schwarber is another blow to the power in Boston's lineup. The Red Sox still have options available on the free agent market to add some power, most notably Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. The Sox reportedly are among the teams interested in Freeman.
