Mitch Moreland was reactivated from the injured list on Friday, but was forced to exit the Red Sox' matchup vs. the Rays early with another injury.
The first baseman was replaced by Michael Chavis in the seventh inning due to right quad tightness. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters after the game that Moreland felt discomfort in his quad after grounding out in the fifth.
“The second ground ball he felt it,” Cora told reporters after the game. “He went out and played defense and came in and told me about it. So, I was just talking to [head athletic trainer Brad Pearson], actually, and [Moreland] doesn’t feel great. So we’ll talk a little bit more when I’m done here with Dave [Dombrowski] and see what we’re going to do.”
If the injury is as serious as Cora is making it sound, that's a tough break for Moreland who just returned after missing 10 games with a back strain.
As for how another IL stint would affect the Red Sox, Chavis likely would once again be counted on to be the primary first baseman with Steve Pearce still sidelined with back spasms. Sam Travis remains an option as well.
After dropping the series opener on Friday night, the Sox will look to bounce back in their day/night doubleheader vs. the Rays on Saturday.
