Marco Hernandez played in 21 games for the Red Sox during the 2017 season, hitting a modest .276 in 60 plate appearances, but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that would require surgery.
Hernandez would undergo two more surgeries, with the third coming last July. After 21 games in Pawtucket where he hit .303, Boston called him up to replace the injured Mitch Moreland. Hernandez had himself a day during the Red Sox doubleheader against the Rays Saturday, hitting a double in his first major-league at-bat in over two years.
Then in the sixth inning of Game 2, Hernandez drove a double off the Green Monster that scored two runs and extended the Red Sox lead to 5-1.
While Moreland is on the 10-day IL, Hernandez will surely get more opportunities to prove he belongs on a big-league roster. Given his impressive comeback story, he'll be a hard player to root against.
