WCVB first reported news of Remy's passing Sunday morning.

Remy had battled lung cancer for several years and was diagnosed with cancer seven times after his initial diagnosis in 2008.

He stepped away from his color analyst role at NESN in August to undergo treatment, but returned to Fenway Park on Oct. 5 to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Red Sox's American League Wild Card Game against the New York Yankees.

A native of Somerset, Mass., Remy enjoyed a 10-year major league career that included seven seasons with Boston after a three-year stint with the California Angels.

He joined NESN as a color analyst in 1988 and spent the next 33 years with the network, endearing himself to generations of Red Sox fans.
