BOSTON — A day after pitching in cold conditions at Fenway Park in the American League Championship Series, Chris Sale was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital with a stomach illness.
The Red Sox said Sale was admitted on Sunday afternoon. The earliest he's expected to be released is Monday, according to the team.
"He will be kept overnight for evaluation and any further updates will be released when available," the team said in a statement.
The 29-year-old Sale allowed just one hit in four innings against the Astros but walked four and saw his velocity uncharacteristically low for much of the outing. He struggled with his command, particularly with his slider, until his final frame. Sale fanned five and allowed just two earned runs, keeping the Red Sox in a game they wound up losing 7-2.
"He only had one pitch going," Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday afternoon, before news of Sale's illness broke. "It was a fastball armside. To [Yuli] Gurriel he went inside, to [Carlos] Correa he went inside and then he swung at a horrible slider, but that’s the beauty of those guys. He knew he wasn’t on and he was like, 'Let’s see how I can maneuver this.' And he did. Then he found it. The great ones, they do that."
