Red Sox legend David Ortiz voted into Baseball HOF as lone member of 2022 class

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz is headed to Cooperstown.

The Baseball Hall of Fame announced the voting results for the 2022 class Tuesday evening and Ortiz was the only player who crossed the 75 percent threshold needed to be inducted. Ortiz received 77.9 percent of the vote, and he will be enshrined in July. Members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) vote on the Hall of Fame candidates each year.

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling received 58.6 percent of the vote. His HOF fate now rests in the hands of the veterans committee going forward.

Ortiz had a stellar case for the Hall of Fame.

He batted .286 with 541 home runs, 1,768 RBI, 2,472 hits, 1,419 runs scored and a .330 on-base percentage over 20 major league seasons.

Ortiz is best known for his 14-year career with the Red Sox from 2003 through 2016. He became a postseason legend in Boston, helping the franchise end its 86-year title drought with a 2004 World Series championship. He also played a pivotal role in the Red Sox winning the World Series in 2007 and 2013.

His performance in the 2013 World Series was legendary. He batted .688 with two homers, six RBI and 11 hits, seven runs, eight walks and a .760 on-base percentage in six games against the St. Louis Cardinals en route to winning World Series MVP.

Ortiz batted .289 with 17 home runs, 61 RBI, 88 hits, 51 runs, 59 walks and a .404 on-base percentage in 85 career postseason games. He's without question one of the most clutch players in MLB history.

Ortiz joins his good friend and former Red Sox teammate Pedro Martinez in the Hall of Fame. Martinez was the last Red Sox great inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.
