Why did Patriots suddenly become betting favorites to land Cam Newton?

Tired of the rumors tying Cam Newton to the New England Patriots?

Sports bettors would like a word with you.

FanDuel Sportsbook released new odds Sunday on where Newton will begin Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season after the Carolina Panthers released him earlier this offseason.

The favorite? New England at -190, ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars (+300), Pittsburgh Steelers (+750) and Denver Broncos (+1000), among others.

What makes this especially eye-opening is that the Jaguars were favored at -150 odds to land Newton earlier Sunday, while the Patriots were second at +400.

What's going on here? Why the sudden shift in New England's favor in a matter of hours?

There haven't been any new reports linking Newton to the Patriots, but New England didn't select a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, sparking speculation that the team may sign a free-agent signal-caller to compete with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.

Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio actually admitted they plan to add a third quarterback, and while the team signed two undrafted QBs over the weekend, perhaps that revelation led some to make the Newton-New England connection.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, drafted Oregon State QB Jake Luton in the sixth round, and while a QB room of Luton, Gardner Minshew and Joshua Dobbs isn't very inspiring, they at least addressed their need more than the Patriots.

In any case, New England and Jacksonville may be the only two options for Newton if he wants to be a team's clear-cut starter, as NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday. The one problem with that? The Patriots aren't apparently interested, per The Athletic's Jeff Howe.

These new odds are pure speculation, of course, and many still view Newton to the Patriots as a long shot. Our Tom E. Curran has reported the team is confident in Stidham entering 2020, while the 30-year-old Newton would be a high-priced gamble after playing in just two games last season.

But a large contingent of sports bettors apparently believes Bill Belichick snagging Newton is a real possibility.
