Curran: Wariness about Gilmore's future slowing his trade market

Bill Belichick discusses how the emotional impact on the locker room affects how the Patriots will make a decision to trade or acquire someone.

It’s not just the reported asking price that may give interested teams pause in trading for Stephon Gilmore.

It’s wariness about what’s next.

“He’s an attractive option but the flip side is how much will it cost in trade compensation and how hard will he push to get a new deal with a potential new team,” said one league executive.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported early Tuesday that the Patriots ask for Gilmore after “multiple” teams came calling was a first-rounder and a player. That’s steep but not outrageous given there’s another year on Gilmore’s contract and he’s a high-level corner.

Perry: Is a first-round pick realistic in a Gilmore deal?

The Patriots spent a second-round pick last year on wideout Mohamed Sanu who provided them little and was cut during training camp this year. That won’t be the case with Gilmore. Wherever he goes, he’ll contribute. But he almost certainly will want a salary bump in 2021.

According to an NFC executive, when it comes to Gilmore, the Patriots don’t seem particularly anxious to part with the corner at this time for anything but the right price.
