Phil Perry joins Pregame Live to talk about a potential contract extension for Patriots quarterback, Cam Newton
FOXBORO — The reaction from fans and media through two games of the Cam Newton Experience is a testament to just how outstanding those two weeks have been.
When will the Patriots lock him up long-term, people want to know?
Eye-opening as Newton’s play has been — one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through one eighth of the schedule — it’s a little early for all that. According to someone who’d be familiar with any extension talks, there’s nothing imminent for Newton.

The reason? It’s only two weeks. Newton’s injury history, which has been well-documented, is significant. He’s on the other side of 30. Committing multiple years and tens of millions to someone who has been through what Newton has been through physically — and who plays the way he does — carries plenty of risk.
On Newton’s end, when asked Thursday if he liked the team and area enough to consider sticking in New England, he was non-committal. People are too concerned about him “getting the bag,” he explained, even though he’s said money is not his primary focus at this point in his career.

So the Patriots will roll, for now, with Newton on his current deal — making just over $1 million on his contract that includes incentives that could get him to $7.5 million. Whether or not he’s the long-term solution in New England? That’s to be determined.
