Giants hiring another former Patriots assistant as head coach

If both Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler end up in Las Vegas next season, would they bring Jerod Mayo with them? Phil Perry and Albert Breer offer some insight on Early Edition

The New York Giants appear undeterred by their previous experience with the Bill Belichick coaching tree.

After two disastrous seasons with former New England Patriots special teams coach Joe Judge, the Giants are hiring Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who previously had two stints in Foxboro under Belichick.

Daboll, 46, coached in New England from 2000-06 as a defensive assistant and wide receivers coach, returning from 2013-16 as tight ends coach. Both in between and after, he spent time under other former Belichick assistants, including Eric Mangini with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns and Romeo Crennel with the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2017, he was offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama under Nick Saban.

Since 2018, Daboll has been offensive coordinator in Buffalo, helping oversee the transformation of quarterback Josh Allen from raw rookie to MVP candidate.

Daboll will be a first-time head coach for an organization which has ran through three head coaches since 2016 and hasn't won a playoff game since after the 2011 season -- Super Bowl XLVI over the Patriots. Judge went 10-23 over two seasons with Big Blue.

The Giants had also interviewed former New England assistant Brian Flores, who was fired by the Miami Dolphins after going 24-25 from 2019-21.

With the reported hiring of Daboll, six teams remain without new head coaches -- although one of those teams, the Las Vegas Raiders, could be closing in on Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. New England inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo has also interviewed for several head coaching vacancies this offseason.
