If Josh McDaniels wants to become an NFL head coach again, he may have an intriguing opportunity next season.
The New England Patriots offensive coordinator is no stranger to head coaching rumors over the last few seasons. In 2018, he infamously bailed on the Indianapolis Colts job to stay in New England. The 44-year-old interviewed for the Green Bay Packers job after the 2018 season, then for the Cleveland Browns' after the 2019 campaign.

The Houston Texans, Atlanta Falcons, and Detroit Lions each will be looking for a new head coach this offseason. Perhaps the best fit for McDaniels, however, is a struggling team with a head coach who may be on the hot seat.
Albert Breer of The MMQB joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand to discuss the possibility of McDaniels replacing Anthony Lynn as the next Los Angeles Chargers head coach in 2021 (video above).
"I think he's going to look at jobs this year," Breer said. "His name might not be quite as hot as it has been in previous years. He's also getting a little older, and I think that's gotta be a factor for any coach who's in that situation who's a hot name when they were younger. And so, yeah I think his name is going to be out there.
"I think the team I'd watch most as far as Josh McDaniels goes is actually [the Chargers]. I've just heard some stuff about potential interest there and if you look at that roster, you can win pretty quickly if you know what you're doing there. And you're going to have a quarterback for the next three years on a rookie contract which, I don't know how much of [Justin Herbert] you guys have watched, but his ceiling high. This guy's baseline might be Ben Roethlisberger. ... I think there's a lot to work with out there."

The Chargers currently are 3-8 despite Herbert's outstanding rookie season. We've been down this road before with McDaniels rumors, but it's certainly an interesting fit for an offensive-minded coach looking for a chance to win right away.
McDaniels and the Patriots (5-6) will take on Herbert and the Chargers Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
