Kyrie Irving is set to become a free agent in just under two weeks. But with free agency drawing nearer, he appears to be focusing on opportunities outside of Boston as he prepares to sign his third NBA contract.
In fact, talks with the Boston Celtics may be non-existent.
In a recent story, Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe pointed out that there has been very little communication between Irving and the Celtics.
The strangest part of the Irving situation right now is that it appears he has essentially ghosted on the Celtics. The people within the organization I have spoken with have made it clear that they have had little, if any, communication with Irving in recent weeks.
This obviously isn't a good sign for the Celtics who are already "almost to the point of resignation" when it comes to re-signing Kyrie. There is already plenty of noise suggesting that Irving is preparing to leave the Celtics, so if he has cut off communication with them, that would further lower their chances of bringing him back.
This also adds greater meaning to the rumored meeting between the two sides that could take place before the 2019 NBA Draft. Irving's decision could have an impact on the Celtics' draft strategy. So, hopefully, things get sorted out before then, even if it does look likely that Irving won't return to Boston.
The NBA draft will take place on Thursday. In his latest mock draft, A. Sherrod Blakely has the Celtics taking a sharpshooter out of Kentucky with one of their three first-round picks.
