It appears the Celtics never were close to a deal for Anthony Davis after all.
The Pelicans dealt the superstar big man to the Lakers in a blockbuster trade on Saturday. The C's reportedly were unwilling to include forward Jayson Tatum in a trade package, so New Orleans went with Los Angeles' lucrative offer instead.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, Danny Ainge and Co. never felt they were near the finish line with a deal.
The Celtics' unwillingness to beef up their trade package likely was due to the uncertainty with Davis' long-term commitment to Boston. His agent, Rich Paul, warned the C's earlier this week that his client would not sign an extension and instead would enter free agency in 2020.
As the Davis sweepstakes finally come to an end, all eyes are on Kyrie Irving and what the star guard will do once free agency begins on June 30.
