NBA rumors: Celtics' final offer to free agent Al Horford was a four-year contract

The Boston Celtics were willing to offer free-agent forward Al Horford a four-year contract, but he ultimately opted for more money from the Philadelphia 76ers.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Sunday night that Horford has agreed to a four-year, $109 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Woj also reported, citing league sources, that Boston's "final offer did cover four years but was less in guaranteed money." He detailed the 76ers' offer to Horford includes "$97 million in guaranteed money, and $12 million in bonuses tied to championships."

This move makes sense for the 76ers, who are now the likely favorite to win the Eastern Conference and play in the 2020 NBA Finals. Philly is in win-now mode, and Horford's tremendous defense, solid 3-point shooting and leadership should be very valuable in the Sixers' pursuit of a championship. Horford also adds playoff experience/success to a Philly squad that's come up short in the conference semifinals in each of the last two seasons.

The Celtics were smart not to overpay to retain Horford. He was, without question, a key part of Boston's success at both ends of the floor over the last three seasons, However, he's also 33 years old, and Boston's roster, even after agreeing to sign All-Star free agent point guard Kemba Walker, is not a true title contender.

Where do the Celtics go from here?

They clearly still lack depth at power forward and center. The Celtics can look for bargain deals in free agency or enter the 2019-20 season giving more minutes and larger roles to young players such as Robert Williams, Semi Ojeleye and Grant Williams.
