This start time is important for a few reasons, which have to do with seeding for the Eastern Conference playoffs.
The Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets play at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, so their games should be done or close to it when the Celtics tip off against the Grizzlies. The Nets and Cavaliers are potential first-round opponents for Boston.
If the Celtics really want to avoid the Nets, and a win over the Grizzlies would secure a top-two seed for the C's, then it makes sense for them to not try so hard to win the regular season finale in Memphis.
Here's a look at the current seeding probabilities, based on Basketball Reference's model:
The Nets already have clinched a berth in the play-in tournament, and assuming they secure one of the two playoff spots from that competition, they would play the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the East. The entire play-in tournament field will be set by the time the Celtics play the Grizzlues.
Playing a team with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons in the first round would not be a favorable outcome for any of the top teams in the East. Even though the Celtics are talented enough to beat the Nets in a seven-game playoff series, it's best to avoid Brooklyn for as long as possible.

The top four teams in the East are separated by just 2.5 games entering Monday, so it's very possible that the outcome of the Celtics' last game versus the Grizzlies could determine seeding for multiple teams.
