Marcus Smart, Celtics holding out hope he'll be available for Game 1 vs. Pacers

The Celtics already know Marcus Smart and a host of other regulars won't play Tuesday night against the Wizards in the team's regular-season finale.

What they don't know is when Smart will be able to suit up again.

Smart was injured in a collision with Orlando's Nikola Vucevic Sunday night, and though he tried to soldier on, he eventually had to be helped to the locker room by two trainers. The Celtics have announced the injury as a left hip contusion.

A source told NBC Sports Boston's Kyle Draper that Smart did some rehab work in the pool today, and though he says he's still very sore, he is feeling better than he did last night. He hasn't yet had an MRI, and the plan is to see how he progresses today and tomorrow.

Smart and the Celtics are holding out hope that he will be available for Game 1 of the team's first-round series against the Pacers this weekend.

It's no surprise that Smart has already been ruled out for Tuesday — and with nothing to gain for the Celtics, most other rotation players will join him on the sidelines, including Kyrie Irving, Al Horford, Gordon Hayward, and Jayson Tatum.

That leaves Brad Stevens with nine available players: Terry Rozier, Semi Ojeleye, Brad Wanamaker, Robert Williams, P.J. Dozier, R.J. Hunter, Daniel Theis (questionable), Guerschon Yabusele (probable), and Jaylen Brown (probable).
