BOSTON — Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving suffered a sprained right knee in the second quarter of Saturday’s defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers and did not return.
Celtics coach Brad Stevens did not have an update on Irving after the game and said Irving would undergo further testing Sunday to determine the severity of the injury.
“I don’t know anything about it. From what I’ve heard he’s going to have further tests [Sunday],” said Stevens. "His knee buckled a little bit in the second quarter and so that’s all I know.”

Irving came up hobbling after he stepped awkwardly trying to navigate his way through a screen with little more than four minutes to go in the first half. After hopping a bit on his left foot, he walked slowly down the court while flexing his right knee in obvious discomfort.
Irving tried to play through the pain and then got clipped again trying to sprint through a screen while attempting to receive a pass. He stayed in the game for a bit before checking out with 2:28 remaining.

Irving missed the end of last season and the playoffs after undergoing a pair of surgeries on his left knee. Celtics brass has repeatedly stressed how he’s experienced no lingering issues from those procedures. This sprain is on the other knee.
