Danny Ainge had some zingers about Magic Johnson's abrupt Lakers exit

Share

Just two days after Magic Johnson's shocking announcement he's stepping down as the Los Angeles Lakers' president of basketball operations -- and just three days before the Boston Celtics begin their first-round playoff series with Indiana Pacers -- Danny Ainge had some news of his own to share.

"I'm here to announce that I'm resigning," Ainge said.

Ainge was joking, of course, poking fun at Johnson's impromptu revelation as media gathered for Thursday's press conference at the Auerbach Center.

The Celtics' president of basketball operations soon was asked a follow-up about Johnson's resignation and earned another round of laughs with this line:

"When I'm having bad days I often wonder, 'that one night a week on TNT is awfully easy in contrast to this.' So I certainly understand it."

But Ainge mostly reiterated what he told 98.5 The Sports Hub on Wednesday: NBA executives have grueling jobs, and if your heart isn't in it -- as Magic suggested Tuesday night -- then maybe it's time to step aside.

"I have no idea what Magic's going through out there," Ainge added. "I know what the job entails, and it's a lot."

Lest anyone take his joke seriously, Ainge insisted he has a "great job." His top lieutenant, Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren, added a vote of confidence for good measure on Twitter.

Ainge had one more one-liner up his sleeve, though. When asked what the hardest part of his job was, he responded to the gathered reporters, "You guys."
