NHL trade deadline: Bruins reportedly interested in Jets' Andrew Copp

The Winnipeg Jets have won just four of their last 10 games and sit five points behind the second wild card playoff spot in the Western Conference.

If the Jets continue to fall in the standings, it might make more sense for them to become sellers rather than buyers before the March 21 NHL trade deadline.

One name to watch is Andrew Copp. He's able to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and if the Jets can't reach a contract extension with him, trading the 27-year-old center/left wing would be a smart move.

Report: Bruins among teams 'seriously in the chase' for Jakob Chychrun

Which teams might be interested in Copp if he hits the market?

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, in his 32 Thoughts column earlier this week, reported an update on Copp's status:

"Winnipeg wanted to see for itself once Nik Ehlers returned. That started with an overtime defeat to Dallas, a loss to the Rangers and an impressive win over Tampa Bay. I think the Jets’ biggest decisions come this summer. I wondered if there was any chance they tried to pivot and extend Andrew Copp, but can’t find any evidence of that possibility. Boston and Colorado are believed to be among interested parties."

Friedman also spoke about Copp's future during an NHL Network segment:

Copp has scored 13 goals with 19 assists in 52 games for the Jets this season. He's on pace to break his career high of 15 goals, which he set in 2020-21. Copp plays a physical game and isn't afraid to battle along the boards or in front of the net. This is evident on the penalty kill, where Copp often shines and leads all Jets forwards with 2:32 of shorthanded ice time per game.

The Bruins need more scoring depth on the wing, especially if Jake DeBrusk is traded. Based on his positional versatility, goal-scoring ability and style of play, Copp likely would be a good fit on Boston's roster. He'd certainly be an upgrade offensively over the likes of Trent Frederic, Nick Foligno, etc.
