Swayman signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Bruins in March of 2020. The contract has a salary cap hit of $925,000 and $1.05 million AAV.

Swayman played junior hockey in the United States for two years in high school before playing in college for the University of Maine. 

Swayman joined the Pikes Peak Miners 18U AAA team in the NAPL for the 2015-16 season after playing the two previous seasons at South Anchorage High School. He later played for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL for the 2016-17 season. 

After getting drafted by the Bruins, Swayman played three seasons for Maine, beginning in the 2017-18 season. In his three seasons for the Black Bears, Swayman had a .927 save percentage, 2.51 goals against average and four shutouts in 100 games. 

Swayman won several awards during his collegiate career. He earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team and Hockey East All-Star Honorable Mention in 2018. The following season, Swayman was named to the Hockey East Third All-Star Team. 

In his last season with Maine, Swayman won the Mike Richter Award as the most outstanding goalie in men's college hockey. He was also named the 2019-20 Hockey East Player of the Year, was a Hobey Baker Award finalist and won the Walter Brown Award, along with a slew of other honors.

Swayman left Maine to join the Bruins after the 2019-20 season. He is Maine's all-time leader in saves (3,130) and minutes played (5,906:45). Swayman's save percentage as a Black Bear (.927) is second only to former Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard (.931).

Swayman represented the United States in the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, winning bronze. He also played for Team USA in the 2022 IIHF World Championship, finishing in fourth place after losing to David Pastrnak's Czech Republic in the bronze medal game.

Prior to heading to Boston, Swayman played in nine games with the Providence Bruins. He won his first seven games, ending his stint in Providence with a 8-1-0 record and a .933 save percentage. Swayman made his NHL debut against the Philadelphia Flyers on April 6, 2021. His first NFL shutout came ten days later in the Bruins' 3-0 win against the New York Islanders.
