How Bruins prospects Lysell, Duran, Locmelis have fared at World Juniors

The Boston Bruins are being represented by three prospects at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Edmonton.

Fabian Lysell (Sweden), Riley Duran (United States) and Dans Locmelis (Latvia) are all playing meaningful roles for their respective teams, and each of them have scored at least one goal in the tournament so far. All three of their teams reached the quarterfinals, too, which will provide these players with valuable experience in high-pressure international games.

With the quarterfinals scheduled to begin Wednesday, let's take a look at how Lysell, Duran and Locmelis have fared at the World Juniors so far.

Fabian Lysell, Sweden

Position: RW

Stats: 1 G, 3 A, 4 GP

Lysell has been one of the most fun players to watch in Edmonton over the last two weeks. It doesn't take long to figure out he has excellent speed and playmaking ability.

He's also scored one of the best goals of the tournament. The 19-year-old forward found the back of the net from an almost impossible angle against Austria last Friday.

It is Lysell's only goal of the tournament so far, but he also has three assists. He picked up a helper in Sweden's 4-2 win over Germany in the final preliminary round game Monday night. Sweden's victory clinched second place in Group B and a quarterfinals matchup with Latvia on Wednesday.

Lysell's worst game of the tournament was Sweden's 3-2 loss to the United States. He was held scoreless and didn't make much of an impact in 16:46 of ice time. He might have a chance to atone for that performance if Sweden plays Team USA again in the medal round.

Riley Duran, USA

Position: Center

Stats: 2 G, 3 A, 4 GP

Duran was a sixth-round pick (182nd overall) of the Bruins in the 2020 NHL Draft. He was selected to the United States squad after a strong 2021-22 season for Providence College during which he tallied 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in 38 games.

He's played quite well for the United States with five points in four games.

Duran's offensive output helped Team USA win Group B and finish the preliminary round as the No. 2 seed behind Canada.

Dans Locmelis, Latvia

Position: Center

Stats: 1 G, 0 A, 4 GP

The Bruins selected Locmelis in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft last month. Latvia was added to the tournament field in place of Russia, giving Locmelis a great opportunity to earn some international experience. He scored one goal in four games as Latvia earned a 1-0-1-2 record in the preliminary round.

Latvia plays Sweden in the quarterfinals, where they will be heavy underdogs.

Locmelis played in Sweden last season and will travel to the United States to play for the USHL's Youngstown Phantoms during the 2022-23 campaign.
