Highlights from Bruins' 4-3 loss to Jets

FINAL SCORE: Jets 4, Bruins 3

IN BRIEF: After snapping its 19-game points streak over the weekend, Boston has now dropped three straight in regulation. The Bruins spotted the Jets a 2-0 lead after goals from Blake Wheeler (remember him?) and Mark Schiefele, then tied it at 2 with goals from Charlie McAvoy and Joakim Nordstrom. Then in the third, down two goals again, Zdeno Chara fired a missile from the blue line that was deflected by Charlie Coyle to cut it to 4-3, but it wasn't enough. BOX SCORE

BRUINS RECORD: 42-20-9, 93 points (2nd in Atlantic Division)

FROM JOE HAGGERTY:

*The Bruins once again fought and scratched back after digging a two-goal deficit, and once again they ultimately fell short against a playoff-caliber team in Winnipeg that was able to ultimately put them away. Charlie Coyle scored on a tipped puck in front of the net off a Zdeno Chara point shot with less than three minutes to go in the game to turn it into a one-goal game for the final few minutes, but that’s as close as the Bruins would get in a 4-3 loss. The Bruins have now lost three regulation games in a row for the first time since earlier this season in December, and the B’s are really showing the lack of depth and explosiveness based on the scorers they’re missing out of the lineup.

Why Swayman's gold medal run at Worlds is a great sign for Bruins

Marchand is going back to Stanley Cup Final as key contributor to Panthers' run

*Coyle scored his first goal as a member of the Bruins in the third period when he camped in front of the net and tipped home a Zdeno Chara shot from the point. Coyle finished with the goal and a plus-1 rating in 17:48 of ice time, had three shots on net and five overall shot attempts, and a registered hit in his night’s work. But the biggest thing for Coyle is that he begin to generate some offensive production regardless of where he’s slotted into the lineup, and the sight of him getting his big body to the net for a net-front goal is a great, encouraging sign for the B’s.

*Once again, the Bruins found themselves down a couple of goals in the first period and fighting an uphill battle. They managed to halve the deficit by scoring in the final minutes of the period, but the consistent inability to get out to good starts over the last few weeks is really adding to the degree of difficulty for Bruins victories. They gave up the first goal just 1:08 into the game after the fourth line was all caught below the goal line on an offensive rush, and then Zdeno Chara and the rest of the B’s defense allowed Patrik Laine a wide open shot off the rush that Blake Wheeler tapped in on the rebound. It was a fourth line cheating too much offensively (which they should never do) and some pretty poor transition defense at work.

*It’s good to see Joakim Nordstrom score a goal to snap a 25-game goal-scoring drought, on a goal that tied the game in the second period. Once again it’s been a so-so night for the Bruins fourth line amid some “meh” games lately, and so the B’s coaching staff slid Nordstrom on the fourth lien with Sean Kuraly and Noel Acciari. The move paid immediate dividends as Kuraly fired a puck on net, and then Nordstrom scored on the second effort rebound attempt as Nordstrom and Acciari were both whacking at the front of the net.

*Interesting look with David Backes manning the right wing on the top line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron while in Winnipeg. It actually resulted in Backes getting a couple of shots on net (four, to be exact), six shot attempts and three big hits with a pretty good energy showing from him, but it remains to be seen how long Bruce Cassidy will stick with that. Certainly it doesn’t feel like a permanent solution by any means, but the presence of the big-bodied Backes may give No. 37 and No. 63 a little more room to operate with on the ice.
