Charlie McAvoy couldn’t be happier after signing a massive eight-year contract extension with the Bruins

Charles Patrick McAvoy Jr. was selected in the first round (14th overall) by the Boston Bruins in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

McAvoy has quickly emerged as a building block on the blue line for the Bruins, taking over as the No. 1 defenseman following the departure of Zdeno Chara.

Here are Charlie McAvoy's contract details with the Bruins

Charlie McAvoy signed an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with the Bruins in October 2021. 

McAvoy can become a free agent after the 2029-30 season, at age 31, following his 13th NHL season. He has a no-movement clause in his new deal that kicks in during the 2024-25 season that's reduced to a 10-team no-trade clause for the last two years of the deal.

Through five NHL seasons, McAvoy has earned more than $17 million.

Charlie McAvoy's amateur, college and minor league career

McAvoy played college hockey for two seasons at Boston University prior to turning pro.

While at BU, McAvoy was paired with future Bruins teammate Matt Grzelcyk on the blue line at certain times.

In two seasons for the Terriers, McAvoy had eight goals and 43 assists for 51 points over 75 games. BU made the NCAA men's hockey tournament in each season McAvoy was there, losing in the first round to Denver in 2015-16 and to Minnesota-Duluth in 2016-17.

McAvoy played two years for the USA Hockey National Development Program in the United States Hockey League for two seasons, tallying four goals and six assists for 10 points with the U-17 team in 2013-14 and three goals and 16 assists for 19 points with the U-18 team in 2014-15.

McAvoy twice played in the World Junior Championships for Team USA, winning gold in 2017 and bronze in 2016.

McAvoy played four games with the Providence Bruins after turning pro in the spring of 2017 and was recalled by Boston for its postseason series against the Ottawa Senators. He has remained a mainstay on the blue line since.
