Merloni: Someone from Red Sox rotation ‘has to step up'

The Boston Red Sox starting rotation was a concern coming into the season, and that concern still remains.

On The Baseball Show, Lou Merloni, Sean McAdam and Trenni Kusnierek all agree that one of these starters needs to put an end to the rotation's struggles because an ace isn't in the cards right now.

The trio agreed that Joe Kelly has the potential to play the roll of stopper for the rotation, but Sean McAdam says his lack of an finish-pitch hurts his chances.

"That's been a knock on him, for a guy who can get the fastball up to 96,97 even 98 at times, that he doesn't put people away," said McAdam. "They're not necessarily making hard contact, but they are making contact and driving that pitch count up because every at-bat is 6,7,8 pitches."

"An ace isn't going to help you right now, there's too many of them," said Merloni. "You don't want to have one out of five stop them, the other four go five innings. You're done, you're not a good baseball team. Someone from this group has got to step up."
