Lions vs Vikings Odds, expert picks, team and player news, betting trends, and stats

The remaining undefeated team will put their record on the line at Ford Field this weekend! The Minnesota Vikings (6-0) will try to win a third straight meeting against the Detroit Lions (4-2) after sweeping last year and holding them to 34 total points. The Lions swept the Vikings in 2024, handing Minnesota two of their three regular-season losses, so it’s safe to say this should be a good one!

Minnesota is coming off a 16-10 comeback win over Indianapolis. The last four opponents Minnesota has faced are a combined 7-20 this season. The Vikings entered the fourth quarter down 10-6 and posted two scores on three possessions (missed FG on the other). The Vikings offense went 3-of-11 on third downs, averaged 4.9 yards per pass compared to 5.1 per run, and totaled 275 yards. The defense forced a pick on the final possession to seal the game and held the Colts to 218 yards and 3.7 yards per play. There was certainly some rust early from Minnesota coming out of the bye week.

Detroit has earned back-to-back wins over Arizona (45-21) and Green Bay (20-17) to get above .500. The Lions defense is on its best two-game stretch of the early season with 38 points allowed and 106 rushing yards — both the best over a two-game span. The passing attack is firing on all cylinders. Jared Goff has an NFL-best 14:0 TD-to-INT ratio, but his two top weapons popped up on the injury report this week as questionable: Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Depending on their status, Detroit may be at a disadvantage, but reports say they’re expected to play.

Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Expert picks & predictions for Lions vs Vikings

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes the Lions to cover:

“Minnesota was lucky not to lose last week, but being an underdog on the road this week tells me the Vikings will lose in Detroit. The Lions’ defense looks like it may have found something in the last two games against Arizona (21 points) and Green Bay (17 points). I don’t trust Kyler Murray to be the quarterback to break through this Lions wall, and what he does on first downs could be the biggest difference. The Vikings rank last in the NFL for offensive success on first downs (29.2%), while the Lions rank first (50%). I think Detroit will be able to move the ball on a Minnesota defense that hasn’t played a top 10 offense since Chicago in Week 2. The Vikings’ undefeated streak is coming to an end this week. I’ll take the Lions -3. I think this closes at -4.5.”

Quarterback matchup for Vikings vs Lions

· Minnesota: Kyler Murray – In Murray’s last four games, he’s averaged 198.5 passing yards and has thrown three touchdowns to one interception. Murray ranks 32nd in play-action completion percentage (44.7%), 31st in blitzed completion percentage (52.9%), and 46th in EPA (-10.2). Minnesota hasn’t trusted Murray in the red zone. He has 12 pass attempts inside the 20 (32nd) and hasn’t stretched the field much either, with 13 deep ball attempts (30th). Murray is 33rd in pace of play, and Goff is 7th, so it will be interesting which tempo Murray and Minnesota play at.

· Detroit: Jared Goff – Goff is off to a fantastic start to the season with 14 passing touchdowns (T-14th) and zero interceptions (T-1st). His 1,778 passing yards rank sixth as he’s coming off his third game with at least 300 passing yards. Goff has the second-most red zone pass attempts (47), and ranks top five in play action completion percentage (64%), clean pocket completion percentage (72.7%), blitzed completion percentage (74%), deep ball completion percentage (50%), and EPA (+61.6). This is looking like a career year for Goff, which could result in some MVP votes. Goff has thrown at least 4,400 yards in the last four seasons and 29-plus touchdowns in that span.
