Mage (15-1) storms down the final stretch and holds off Two Phil’s to claim victory in the 149th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
This is trainer Gustavo Delgado‘s first win at the Derby. Javier Castellano, a Hall of Fame jockey, wins his first Kentucky Derby. Both Delgado and Castellano are from Venezuela.
Delgado, who had run in two previous Kentucky Derby’s, had a good feeling about his three-year-old this year.
‘This time, I was sure that the horse was very, very good,” Delgado told NBC’s Britney Eurton.
Mage paid $32.42 to win, $14.58 to place and $9.08 to show. Two Phil’s (9-1) paid $10.44 to place and $6.52 to show. Angel of Empire (4-1) paid $4.70 to show.
Mage is likely to be pointed to the Preakness Stakes next. The second leg of the Triple Crown sets off from Pimlico in two weeks on Saturday, May 20.
