Why Schmitz doesn't have Wiseman cracking top 100 next season

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr met with the media and confirmed Draymond Green and James Wiseman missed Monday’s practice. The Warriors announced last week that two unidentified players tested positive for COVID-19.

Who are the top 100 players in the NBA?

ESPN on Tuesday morning released the guys in their No. 100 to No. 51 range, and no rookies made the cut.

NBA draft analyst Mike Schmitz used the rankings as a vehicle to spin things forward to next October when ESPN presumably will release the top-100 list for the 2021-22 season.

And he believes LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, Isaac Okoro, Obi Toppin, Deni Avdija and Tyrese Haliburton are the six rookies most likely to crack the top 100.

Warriors center James Wiseman did not make the cut.

"There are prospects I'm higher on long term than some of the names listed -- including the Atlanta Hawks' Onyeka Okongwu -- but projected playing time as a rookie plays a sizable role in breakout potential," Schmitz writes. "That's one reason the Golden State Warriors' James Wiseman doesn't make this list, too."

Warriors convert Spencer to standard NBA contract, sign Key to two-way

Why Butler vs. Brunson is matchup to watch in Warriors-Knicks game

It won't be surprising if the 19-year-old is left off of next year's rankings. But when you consider the fact the Warriors do not have a clear-cut starting center, it's a little odd Schmitz cites playing time as a hindrance for Wiseman.

Even though Steve Kerr tempered expectations last week for the No. 2 overall pick in last month's draft and made it clear the 7-footer has a lot of catching up to do, there absolutely is a path where Wiseman assumes the starting position relatively early in the season and plays at least 20 minutes per game.

But it's also possible that Wiseman -- who is unable to practice right now, and it's unclear when he finally will take the court with his teammates -- develops on the slower side.

"It's unfortunate, but it's just the way it goes," Kerr said Monday. "Our coaching staff has been showing him tape the last few days. He's still getting some homework in between now and the time he'll be able to play again.

"It's not ideal, but nothing is ideal for anybody in 2020."
