What LeBron's Lakers extension means for Steph, Warriors

On Dubs Talk, Drew Shiller makes his bold prediction on Steph Curry’s MVP chances following Klay Thompson’s injury.

Steph Curry and the Warriors might be ready to move past their rivalry with LeBron James, but that doesn't mean the Los Angeles Lakers star isn't still going to be the main impediment to Golden State's return to the top of the NBA.

James and the Lakers are the defending NBA champions after conquering the Orlando bubble, and the 35-year-old star will be in the Western Conference even longer after he agreed to a two-year contract extension on Wednesday, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told Shams Charania of The Athletic.

As the Warriors prepare to re-introduce themselves to the NBA spotlight after a year-and-a-half away, James and the Lakers have supplanted them as the kings of the NBA. James' extension locks the Lakers in as title contenders for the foreseeable future and gives the Warriors their target as they begin their championship hunt as underdogs for the first time since their meteoric rise.

While James is 35, he has shown no signs of slowing down and remains arguably the best player in the NBA. The four-time NBA champion takes pristine care of his body and has adapted his game as his body has aged.

James' agreement to extend his stay with the Purple and Gold likely tells us the length of the deal that Anthony Davis will eventually sign. Davis is an unrestricted free agent, but is planning on signing a long-term deal with the Lakers in the coming weeks. With James' timeline clear, it wouldn't be surprising to see Davis link his deal up with James the same way Kawhi Leonard and Paul George did with the Los Angeles Clippers.
