When the 2018-19 NBA schedule was released, many expected the Warriors-Lakers showdown on Apr. 4 to have significant playoff implications, perhaps offering a glimpse at a potential conference finals series.
While the Warriors did their part -- they're inching closer to securing homecourt advantage through the conference finals -- the Lakers failed to do theirs. Los Angeles (35-43) has been eliminated from playoff contention for some time, and the Lakers are limping to the finish line.
Injuries have certainly played a part, as LeBron James, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart have all been ruled out for the remainder of the season. The Warriors (53-24), meanwhile, have five games left to get healthy and tuned up for their pursuit of a third consecutive NBA title.

The Lakers defeated Golden State rather handily on Christmas Day, but the Warriors have responded with back-to-back victories over Los Angeles in their two subsequent games since.
