Warriors' Steph Curry sends veiled response to ‘system player' critique

Steph Curry discusses how well-spoken, successful Black men are treated differently by society, and the “subtle racism” directed at them that trickles down through society.

It's not often you hear a two-time NBA MVP referred to as a "system player." But that's exactly how ESPN's Bomani Jones views Warriors star Steph Curry, as he shared on his podcast Friday.

"He's got sick handle and all that stuff. There's something different," Jones said on "The Right Time with Bomani Jones." "It's hard to explain what it is with Steph, but Steph is somehow like the greatest system player of all time. And I'm not saying that to shade him. But you are not going 1-4 flat and being like, 'Get us a bucket.' "

Curry seemed to respond with a veiled reference to the comments while praising Bay Area native and 2020 WNBA No. 1 overall draft pick Sabrina Ionescu in her professional debut.

"And shout out to all the system players in the @WNBA," Curry said. "We get it done."

Calling the NBA's only unanimous MVP a "system player" is questionable at best from Jones. Curry is the face of the NBA's transition to being more focused on outside shooting, as his limitless range showed teams the value of loading a roster up with shooters.

Warriors' Buddy Hield Experience a historic ride unlike any other

Every player among the best in his sport is going to face criticism, that's the reality of competing in the era of social media.

This likely amounts to nothing more than bulletin-board material for Curry, in a year that has featured a flurry of it while the Warriors fell back to earth after five consecutive runs to the NBA Finals. For as long as he's been on a basketball court, the mid-major product has been undervalued and criticized.

It's fair to say Curry will have plenty of motivation entering the 2020-21 season.
