Warriors pick up Omari Spellman's third-year contract option for 2020-21

The Warriors received a lot of bad news Wednesday night, but one of their players got the opposite.

Shortly after Steph Curry left the eventual loss to the Suns with a broken left hand, NBC Sports Bay Area's Logan Murdock cited a source in reporting that the Warriors had picked up power forward Omari Spellman's contract option for next season. The team had until Thursday to do so.

On Thursday, the Warriors made the news official.

The Warriors acquired Spellman from the Hawks in July in exchange for Damian Jones and a 2026 second-round draft pick. The 22-year-old has given the Warriors some much-needed size in the paint while players such as Willie Cauley-Stein and Kevon Looney have been sidelined with injuries.

Given Curry's injury, several young players on Golden State's roster are about to see a big uptick in their playing time and opportunities. Spellman certainly qualifies as one of them.
